How To Choose a Wedding Photographer

Photography is so much more than just having a nice camera and taking a lot of photos to cover your bases. The best LA wedding photographer will know how to get the most out of every lighting condition, use off-camera lighting, get the most out of their subjects, have a knack for creative compositions and artistic eye, can handle large groups of people with ease when it comes to posing, use the right lenses at the right settings for each situation, and have a lot of experience!

The first thing we hear from assistants trying to become professional wedding photographers is, “Wedding photography is so much harder than I thought it would be.” Our answer: “Of course it is!” The goal of this article is to prevent you from hiring the wrong photographer, or even worse, “Uncle Joe”.

As we mentioned earlier, being a good photographer requires expertise. Photography is not only a form of art but requires technical skills as well to be able to get the most out of every lighting situation, rain or shine, even in orange and dingy light, even in the rain (and sometimes especially), and so on. With an artistic vision, the right photographer can take images shots in these situations from standard shots to beautiful images.

It is my personal opinion that if a photographer’s book really resonates with you, that is probably the photographer you want. Don’t let someone with a smooth sales pitch trap you into having mediocre photography at your wedding. Artist personalities come in all forms but it is also important to choose someone who is experienced and adept at posing and handling large groups of people with ease, and also the “romantics” part of the day. These are some of our favorite parts of the wedding day.

There are photographers that consider photography their weekend or side gig. Or photographers that have shot less than 100 weddings. I think it is definitely important to choose a photographer who has shot 100+ weddings because we have seen it all, are ready for all kinds of situations that may arise, and also- we have been doing photography full-time for the past 7 years.

Lastly, having more than one wedding photographer is important. One person cannot be in all places during the wedding day. There are many things happening at once on a wedding day and it is essential to have two photographers there to catch it all. Unless your wedding is less than 50 persons, having two photographers there to cover the event definitely makes a difference.
